EDF Energy Case Study.

>> Executive Summary

EDF Energy, one of the UK’s leading low-carbon energy providers, launched the Residential Accelerator Programme as an agile proof of concept to transform how home and business customers experience energy. The programme aimed to deliver scalable digital and technical capabilities that make energy smarter, more affordable, and aligned with EDF’s long-term sustainability and net-zero goals.

PL Projects was engaged to establish and lead the programme’s planning and controls function, ensuring delivery discipline and visibility across multiple workstreams. We built the planning capability from the ground up, introducing consistent tools, templates, and governance frameworks that unified delivery across eight workstreams. Our consultants embedded best-practice planning and agile principles, enabling clear tracking of progress, effective management of interdependencies, and proactive identification of risks.

Through integrated planning, dependency mapping, and robust reporting, PL Projects enhanced transparency and collaboration between EDF teams and external partners. Our structured approach allowed EDF Energy to make data-driven decisions, maintain schedule control, and align complex technical initiatives under a single cohesive roadmap.

As a result, the programme achieved strong governance, improved visibility, and greater confidence in delivery performance – laying a solid foundation for EDF’s future digital and energy transformation initiatives supporting the UK’s net-zero ambitions.

The Client.

EDF Energy is one of the UK’s leading energy providers, committed to delivering low-carbon electricity and innovative energy solutions to millions of residential and business customers. As part of the global EDF Group – Europe’s largest generator of renewable electricity – EDF Energy plays a pivotal role in supporting the UK’s transition to a net-zero future.

In the UK, EDF generates approximately 17% of the country’s low-carbon electricity through its nuclear and renewable assets. It operates major nuclear power stations such as Hinkley Point B and Sizewell B and leads key projects like Hinkley Point C and Sizewell C. EDF Renewables UK continues to expand its wind, solar, and storage capacity, targeting over 10 GW of generation by 2035.

EDF’s long-term strategy focuses on enabling a smarter, more sustainable energy system through innovation, digitalisation, and customer-centric solutions. The Residential Accelerator Programme was designed to drive this transformation by delivering scalable capabilities that redefine how customers consume and manage energy.

EDF Energy and PL Projects Partnership

The Challenge.

The Residential Accelerator Programme was initiated as an agile proof of concept with an ambitious goal: to reimagine how EDF Energy delivers smarter, simpler, and more affordable energy solutions for UK homes and businesses.

To achieve this, EDF required a robust delivery framework capable of integrating multiple technical workstreams, managing dependencies across suppliers, and maintaining agility while ensuring governance and control.

PL Projects was engaged to establish and lead the programme planning and controls function – a critical enabler for structured delivery. At the time, the programme was in its early stages, and there was an urgent need for an integrated planning framework, consistent standards, and transparent reporting to guide delivery and inform decision-making.

The Solution.

PL Projects designed and implemented a fully integrated planning and controls function that became the backbone of the Residential Accelerator Programme. Our approach combined structured programme governance with agile delivery principles to ensure both flexibility and control.

Planning Function Setup & Governance Framework

We established the core planning function from the ground up, embedding best-practice planning methodologies aligned to both APM standards and EDF’s agile delivery model. This included the creation of clear planning governance, processes, and reporting cycles that brought structure and predictability to programme delivery.

Programme Integration & Standardisation

Our consultants developed a comprehensive programme plan that consolidated eight separate workstream-level plans into a unified delivery roadmap. We introduced standardised planning templates and reporting tools, ensuring consistency and visibility across the programme. This structure provided EDF with the transparency needed to make informed, data-driven decisions.

Dependency & Risk Management

To manage the complexity of cross-workstream and supplier interdependencies, we facilitated joint planning sessions and implemented a dependency management framework that ensured timely alignment and issue resolution. These sessions encouraged collaboration across teams and strengthened supplier coordination.

Enhanced Reporting & Decision Support

PL Projects introduced a structured reporting framework, including integrated dashboards and milestone tracking, giving stakeholders real-time visibility of progress, risks, and performance metrics. This allowed programme leadership to make proactive decisions, manage risks early, and maintain control over delivery outcomes.

The Outcome.

Through our leadership and expertise, the Residential Accelerator Programme achieved a cohesive and well-governed delivery structure that enabled EDF Energy to confidently manage progress across multiple complex workstreams.

Key benefits included:

  • Improved planning maturity: A centralised planning function embedded within the programme provided consistency, structure, and enhanced delivery control.
  • Increased transparency: Integrated reporting and dependency management improved visibility across teams and suppliers, reducing uncertainty and delays.
  • Data-driven decision-making: Standardised outputs and real-time reporting empowered EDF leadership to take timely, evidence-based decisions.
  • Sustainable capability: The frameworks, tools, and processes established by PL Projects continued to add value beyond the initial engagement, supporting EDF’s future delivery initiatives.

Ultimately, the programme delivered a scalable and agile delivery environment that aligned with EDF Energy’s strategic vision of smarter, cleaner, and more efficient energy solutions for the UK market.

We excel in high-value, multi-workstream environments that require both strategic oversight and tactical delivery. In the Residential Accelerator Programme, PL Projects implemented scalable planning frameworks, integrated dependency management, and streamlined reporting to give EDF real-time control and visibility. Our work helped bridge strategy and execution – ensuring every decision was grounded in data, collaboration, and clear governance.

3. Collaborative, People-Focused Delivery

We believe effective transformation depends on people as much as processes. That’s why we embed ourselves within client teams, building trust and capability at every level.
Our consultants worked closely with EDF’s project leads and external suppliers, creating a collaborative environment where planning and delivery could thrive together. By coaching and supporting teams, we ensured that new frameworks and tools were understood, adopted, and owned by the business – not just implemented.

4. Excellence in Planning Maturity and Governance

PL Projects is recognised for its strength in advancing planning maturity and governance capability across complex programmes. At EDF Energy, we established best-practice planning standards, consistent templates, and transparent reporting cycles. This not only provided structure but also created a culture of proactive control – allowing the programme to manage dependencies, mitigate risks, and make informed, timely decisions.

Our goal is not just to deliver success during our engagement – but to leave behind lasting capability. The frameworks, templates, and processes we developed for EDF continue to support the organisation’s delivery functions beyond the Residential Accelerator Programme. By focusing on sustainable solutions, we ensured that EDF’s teams could continue to operate with clarity, confidence, and control.

6. Embedded, Flexible Support

Transformation in the energy sector is fast-paced and continuously evolving. Our consultants don’t bring one-size-fits-all solutions – we adapt, embed, and evolve with the programme. At EDF, we operated as an extension of the client’s delivery team, flexing our approach as priorities shifted to ensure consistent alignment with the organisation’s strategic goals.

In summary, PL Projects brings together structured thinking, deep domain expertise, and a partnership-driven approach to enable organisations like EDF Energy to deliver complex change with confidence. Whether it’s implementing new governance frameworks, driving agile delivery, or enhancing planning maturity, PLP provides the clarity, control, and capability needed to transform strategy into measurable outcomes.

  • Testimonial from EDF Energy for Brett Pryde, Programme Planning Lead

I have now worked with PL Projects on three separate occasions over the last 5 years and with a number of their team and would highly recommend them to anyone looking for high quality planning services and support.
Most recently Brett Pryde was employed as the lead planner for an initiative being undertaken by EDF Energy looking at how to reimagine energy for UK Home and Business customers to enable EDF Energy to address a number of related business challenges arising from competitive uncertainty in the energy supply market, cost base and an aging technology ecosystem.  Brett joined at the outset of the initiative and rapidly set up an approach to developing and maintaining a programme plan that would be effective across a number of business workstreams where planning skills were reasonably immature.
Brett worked closely with the various workstream leads to create the plan and then helped them in a very sympathetic way to maintain and manage their plans.  This was a considerable success.
Brett is extremely knowledgeable, organised, and highly reliable. He usually worked independently and to a very high standard.  He represents PL Projects well onsite and displays excellent business and consulting behaviours.  I am very happy to commend his to organisations without reservation
